Laughter, Love and Storytelling!

What a fantastic afternoon spent with the lovely residents at James Milson Village, Milsons Point, making bears, sharing stories and having fun!

Some of the lovely residents at James Milsons Village dedicated their Thursday afternoon to make Special Bear Friends for the children in hospital. During time spent at the village I had an opportunity to share my story and the positive impact these bears have on the children. The residents were excited to be contributing as they knew how much joy and happiness these would bring to the children.

I was overwhelmed by the happiness this activity brought to the residents and nurses who were involved. I realised that these bears not only have a positive impact on the children who receive them, they can bring laughter and storytelling among the elderly who make them.

I was particularly blessed to have one resident share a story about a doll she had when she was little and the adventures, they went on together. What amazed me the most was when she explained that due to the impact of the War, her family had to sell the doll to buy food. However, she was happy knowing that her doll was given to another child that would look after it for her. She then said, “similar to this bear I am making. I get to pass it on to the children who need it the most”.

It was amazing to hear nurses and residents interacting and sharing stories in an environment that was fun, warm and full of love. Many of the residents took the time to make a special wish on the heart that goes inside the bear, and wished that children who receive the bear will be protected and feel safe with their new friend.

A huge thank you to the staff and residents at James Milson Village for the enormous contribution they have already made to the sick children in hospital. With your love, support and community contribution these bears are ready to be given to sick children. It is amazing to see how this ‘Making a Bear’ activity has stimulated laughter, joy and contributes to improving people’s fine motor skills all at the same time. We are excited to run the activity again at the village and be in an environment filled with fun, laughter and storytelling.
